Australian Cruise Ports International Pty Ltd is a company with a near 20 year history in promoting the seafaring and marine qualities of the Gold Coast Broadwater and adjacent Spit.
In that time, it has participated willingly in a number of government initiatives involving Crown land and seabed leases, conducted by both sides of politics, in an attempt to realise the potential of this unique site.
Even though none of these Government initiatives were finalised, ACPI has maintained its enthusiasm for this part of the Gold Coast and has in recent times devoted its energies to making the Gold Coast a leading hub in the South Pacific for local and international super yachts. This industry sector is growing strongly worldwide with new cruising grounds other than the Mediterranean and the Caribbean being sought out by both yacht owners and skippers. Australia, and Queensland in particular, is firming as a likely new destination. Recent changes to federal legislation governing the chartering of super yachts in Australian waters has given greater impetus to this shift in interest.
Equally the existence of world-class refit and maintenance facilities in the Upper Coomera River have laid a solid foundation for more of these vessels to come here. In realising this opportunity, ACPI has also perceived a gap in the market for a” front of house” super yacht marina in the Broadwater to accommodate these boats while they are in our waters.
Accordingly, ACPI in early 2020 submitted a further expression of interest to the Queensland Government to develop such a marina in the Carters Basin area adjacent to the internationally acclaimed Palazzo Versace hotel. The proposal encompasses 10 to 12 superyacht berths with adjacent boutique hotel, serviced apartments and retail outlets all with marine/seafaring themes. The design and intent has been driven by the Government’s own superyacht strategy and will, if supported, go a considerable way to bringing that strategy to fruition in Queensland. The presence of super yachts in numbers will come to be a vibrant new attraction for the Gold Coast particularly when lit by night.
To complement this proposal ACPI has also promoted to the Queensland Government a seafood marketing exercise principally devoted to the emerging aquaculture industry in northern Australia. Government has long seen this industry as a viable way to supply local and international seafood consumers with high-quality, clean, marine seafood in the necessary volumes as well as meeting demanding export orders. Aquaculture also has the potential to take harvest pressure off local wild stocks of seafood.
To realise this second proposal ACPI has proposed utilising a second piece of Crown land to the immediate south of Mariners Cove as a perfect location for the existing Gold Coast Commercial Fishing Fleet. Integrating this novel attraction into an extensive Gold Coast fish market would appear to have significant tourism value.
ACPI intends to continue promoting both quality farmed seafood and super yacht’s as vital new additions to the Gold Coast and Queensland tourism and industrial sectors.
